This is upper market restaurant compared to the average in gouger street, so out expectations were higher. The menu was quite pretentious, with a paragraph of text to simply state satay prawns? Sunday dinner, party of 3. Squished into the corner, but we didn't mind. The food portions from the specials were quite varied. The amount from the pork dish was smaller then the chicken, and the prawn dish was smaller again. The variations in quality was also a bit hit and miss too. We expected the dishes to be generally better then average, except some of the dishes weren't. The satay prawn dish was a bit lacking in flavour and prawns, the chicken special while good was a bit bland. This is priced just above the average and the food is mostly there too. The service was a bit over the top, it felt like our waiter was bored and really enjoyed topping up glasses and taking any cutlery away, they might have been over zealous from the lack of table space. overall the quality was pleasant and I would be going back, to give them another go. I would suggest they either drop their prices a smidgen or increase the quality of food a smidgen. Otherwise we could quite possibly have come on an off day.
I went here for lunch with my wife for the first time last week. It was fantastic. The service was faultless and friendly. The food was exceptional. The ambience second to none for this style of asian restaurant. We dedided to get a mix of entree size plates and finish with the sticky black rice. Every dish was good wih the highlights being - the prawn and shallot dumpling - best dumpling i have ever had. divine. The shallot cake - could have eaten 5 of these! The s&p squid was cruchy on the outside but so tender inside. The black sticky was was the perfect ending and one of the best i have had. Recommended. We had ten plates of food and without drinks it came to $82.00. Very reasonable at this level. This will now become one of our regular dine out destinations.
Concubine is fantastic. Our party of six went there before going to see John Cleese last night so we were on a deadline. We all elected to have the Chef''s selection which was absolutely brilliant. It was excellent value at $39.95 per head and we could not have eaten any more even though there were a couple of big eaters present.
Very enjoyable all over, I was visiting Adelaide from Melbourne and called in for lunch and was pleasantly surprised with the venue - "best duck i've EVER had!"
Concubine well deserves its accolades and awards; the decor is stunning, the service extremely competant and the food - ooh, the food! The prawn & chive dumpling "yum cha bites" (smaller than an Concubine entree serve, but not mean in the least) were a stand-out and our main of tamarind duck will be our reason to return again (and again, and again!). Serving sizes are good and a full order of bites + entrees + mains would be a challenge (although one to be relished!) even without dessert. They have a good drinks list, although there's limited wines by the glass, and the staff of Concubine provided the best service I've experienced on Gouger in a very, very long while. Highly recommended.
Excellent, Brilliant and fantastic dining experience! We dined here on Saturday the 30th of August and I must say that we will be returning again for more! As we were seated our waiter who was a lovely Asian boy completely looked after us from start to finish! We had the scallops Lamb cutlets, Garfish and some sides and we enjoyed each and everyone of them equally! The wine list is great and the ambience is magnificent! Do yourself a favour and try it for yourself!
Loved it! The menu is small but has many options (i don't eat sea food which can be limiting). The flavours and ingredients were crisp, fresh and a modern take on the usual chinese fare. The service was sincere and helpfull, the decor was elegant (and not noisy). The wine list could be embellished, however I will be returning again soon I enjoyed it so much.
Visited Concubine after reading positive reviews on this website. Dined in a group of 4. Spent slightly more than we would have at a suburban Chinese restaurant, but the food was top notch. High quality, fresh flavours. The difference is obvious. Favourites were San Choy Bow and Crispy Duck Wrap, as well as Steak Black Bean main. The upstairs seats don't have backs, so can end up hurting your back after 90 minutes, but you can request a downstairs booking.
We only had a brief dinner at Concubine. I loved their fresh spin on old and tired chinese. The duck dish we had was succulent and smoky and not at all greasy. The stir-fried greens were fresh and garlicy and also so yummy. The staff were friendly and the gin was served with love and care.
Concubine has a very nice ambience and the food to match. Found it quite elegant with good service. The wine list is small but interesting.
Have been to Concubine a couple of times and each time the food has been excellent and served quicky. The place has a great feel. The service is OK, to make this place better, they need decent staff, who are friendly and efficient. You normally need to ask for drinks and the bill a few times. As a customer you need to work out what is most important to you, as you can get a good chinese meal up the road for half the price, less ambience and about the same service, however it would depend on the occasion, as Concubine is beautiful.
We were a group of 7 on a very busy Friday night. I was impressed with the very patient staff who happily tolerated us taking our time in choosing what we wanted. The food is divine & the upstairs room a lovely place to sit.
We ordered their signature dish, which we were told were the prawns, and they were reasonably tasty. It's basically just a salt n pepper prawns style dish. Also tried their Mah Jong chicken which was tasty but quite average. Their Barramundi though was delicious. Wine selection was good enough although not extensive. Ambience was nice and the decor was quite refreshing compared to other chinese restaurants. Service was good and pleasant.
It was a beautiful evening so as we were seated outside it was alright from that aspect, but from a peak of the chic, handpicked accents and adornments carefully displayed inside the restaurant it was obvious we were missing out on the ambience ? the appeal and charm of the place. It took some time to get menus and our drink order processed and even though I had brought along a bottle of sparkling Bird in Hand Pinot Grigio and it was in plain sight the ice bucket for it to chill never came until we had asked for it three times! After knocking back a couple of Janz - after all we were celebrating - the mood was lighter. All of us being gastro heads we had scanned the menu online and were each excited about different dishes. What ended up with was a splendid meal, one that I truly enjoyed especially for the main course and turned out to be good value for money as well. The Peking Duck wraps were average (the Chinese shops more ?authentic? version that can be found at several stops along gouger do this streets ahead better) but the tofu and snow pea Sang Choi Bao lettuce wraps were delish proving to be a real textural delight. Updated review: Unfortunately, our second visit to Concubine was a complete shambles, not even slightly meeting the standard set previously. On a predictably busy night (chinese new year + valentine's) there was a critical lack of (capable) staff which set the tone for the rest of the night; no drinks orders taken until repeatedly requested, food came out haphazardly, we never even saw our (ordered) rice. I'll say that again: no rice in a chinese restaurant! The place wasn't packed (was accepting walk-ins) and had large tables booked - they must have known that they would be busy so whoever was in charge of rostering deserves a blast. They even took ages to do up our bill and by that time the place had emptied considerably. I must, however, compliment the one waitress who was trying her hardest and had obviously been pulled in at the last minute, more like her and it would have been a completely different experience. Nonetheless, given the rich array of tried-and-true chinese restaurants on Gouger, we'll definitely be giving Concubine a miss in future, in favour of cheaper, more consistent food with much better service. Not recommended.
We were given a voucher to experience Concubine and I was excited as I love all the food on Gouger St. The staff were rude to start with. The food was awful. I ordered crisp roasted pork, what came out was soggy boiled pork. My husband ordered chicken and I am quite sure it was actually fish. Not going there again.
