Outstanding. The meal will go down as one of the best dining experiences of my life. I'm from Victoria and was just visiting and can't wait to go again. It's a great excuse to visit Adelaide.

Good food, served by friendly and knowledgeable staff however they do have an unwritten NO CHILDREN policy (especially in prams). On three occasions we have tried to get in with a pram and each time they have suggested the restaurant is full. Walking back past the restaurant each time after dining elsewhere on Hutt St has revealed they were far from full. Shame really because when we have eaten there (with the help of babysitters) it is quite good.

Fantastic food. Been there twice, had the Barossa Valley pork belly at both occasions and loved it at both occasions. Meat was juicy and tender. Service was attentive, staff was extremely friendly. Best modern japanese I ever had. Decor and ambience was funky yet inviting. Will keep going.

Some of the best food to be found in Adelaide. Consistently original, creative and delicious. A 5 star experience at a fraction of the price: highly recommended

It was a very pleasant experience. The service was great. The food was presented exceptionally well, very creative and tasted lovely. Desert was delicious! The four of us all had different meals and deserts. We were all very pleased.

Kenji is an amazing place to eat! Given the prices of the meals, its better left for special occasions though I think. I got the duck and my girlfriend got a beef curry. While she liked hers, I thought the duck was great, the best I've ever had!

Went on Friday 16 July 2010 My mate wanted to head straight to "KENJI Modern Japanese", from when he got off the plane from Sydney - as he had heard many good reviews(all the way IN Sydney). And once we tasted the "Degustation" ('Kaiseki') menu, we knew the good reviews & comments were genuine. My mate wanted to eat at KENJI as much as he could while in Adelaide for 2days (as they offered menu items that even Sydney NSW did not have). We sampled as many Sakes, Cocktails & Japanese drinks ('Tatayame', 'Umeshu' plum liqueurs) as we could. Were both full by time our Desserts had arrived, but it looked so nice that we couldn't Not have it. Staff went above & beyond their roles; espec in helping us with our choices& in understanding the Menu. The 'Customer Service' exceeded our expectations!(Note:we both work in the Retail businesses). Terrific menu choices & food. Nice Atmosphere&Clientele. Overall, a great Japanese restaurant, that I will go again when I can &espec will take our Interstate friends there when they visit Adelaide. Scott

Great to go out and eat better than at home. While most restaurants promise this, very few deliver. Kenji's food is fresh and thoughtfully prepared, with attention to detail. At our table we had a chef and maitre d'hote from Europe who are normally unhappy with our restaurants. On this occasion they were glowing with praise.

Kenji serve delicious, fresh and value for money traditional and comtemporary japanese food. Plus, the staffs working in this restaurant is so friendly. Yes, i cannot help but to add in a statement about the price for the sashimi. According to a review written by Miss Scarlet, she comment that the price was too dear and suggested to have it in Sushi Train instead. I totally disagree with her comment, Kenji serve more than just salmon and tuna sashimi, they serves yellow tail king fish, scallop, octupus, blood tuna and caviar. All these are top range and premium sashimi. It is far from comparable with sashimi served in sushi train. Plus, from my recent visit the chief have a very special dish in the menu. It was the Wagyu beef curry. That dish was so stunning. Although, i am not a japanese but that curry dish is way better and tastier than some curry dish i had in japan. Well done Kenji, keep it up!

My partner and I started our love affair with Japanese food some twenty five years ago and have tried most that Adelaide has to offer. Kenji for some reason was last on our list and Im happy to say in our humble opinion we saved the best until last. The service was impecable the staff were knowledgable friendly and efficient. The sushi and sashimi platter was sublime and worth every penny the pork belly was melt in the mouth and had a wonderful depth of rich flavour punctuated with slivers of crisp apple, my partner had the barramundi with crab and was in raptures over the crispy skin. the complimentry sorbet between courses was an absolute treat. And not normally one for desserts in japanese restaurants we just could not go past those on offer at Kenji I had the green tea and chocolate fondant with runny cream and green tea icecream well worth the extra workout the followig day and my partner had the chocolate and banana souffle YUM. congratulations to the team at Kenji your love for what you do is evident in the service you give the way you present your food and in every mouthful we enjoyed.

Recently my wife and I went to Kenji for dinner. We had high expectations of this place. We ordered a sashimi main (24 pieces of raw seafood) and a combination dish of sashimi and sushi for a hefty $33 each. The food came out quickly and was well presented. We finished our meal and went home. As soon as we arrived home, we both felt very ill. I had a very bad diarrhoea and my wife had a very upset stomach for the rest of the evening. Not surprisingly we didn't sleep at all that night. The next day I called the restaurant and spoke to its manager. I told her that we felt ill after eating at her restaurant and kindly asked her for a refund. She refused to give us a refund on the grounds that no other customers have reported being ill. I have given her my contact details, but haven't heard from her since. Later I contacted the city council about this poisoning and they performed a full inspection of the restaurant. Unfortunately I do not know the outcome of that inspection. This experience has left us shattered and we are now avoiding all Japanese food. This is not what you expect from a multiple-award winning restaurant (best asian restaurant 2007-2010) that is considered one of the best in Adelaide. Food poisoning from raw seafood is very serious and can even lead to death.

We have eaten here several times over the last year. Each time the food has been imaginative, delicious and superbly presented. The staff know their menu and are pleasantly attentive without being over the top. This is my choice for special occasions.

Sensational food and such wonderful twist on traditional kaiseki. Service was also very polished but easy. Great value. There was so much to choose from - we didn't know where to start - the pork belly with gyoza was utterly mouthwatering.

We semi regularly eat at Kenji and have loved its food. However on our most recent dining experience we tried one of the tuna belly sushi specials and found it as tough as an old boot. While eating the dish we asked the waiter several times if the dish considering it was sushi should be tough with one very tough striation running through it to which he said he would check but never returned. After waiting a significant time we continued eating as we thought that maybe some of the other pieces would be better and maybe just a few pieces had been affected. The dish was not at all good with some portions so tough they where inedible which is very out of character for what we have come to expect of Kenji. After again inquiring with a different staff member later in the meal and also when the bill came out and receiving little in the way of response the manager eventually came and in a very abrupt manner said yes it was supposed to be the way it came out and that we shouldn't have eaten it if we where concerned about it and was highly dismissive of our concerns. I am afraid that we could put up with a bad dish but not the rude response and will not be eating at Kenji again.

This is some of the best food in Adelaide, hands down, everything on the menu is at least good, at best, spectacular, which is so hard to find. A real foodies restaurant. Maybe even irrelevant to the less discerning diners.

Wonderful. The sushi was as beautifully presented as it was fresh and delicious, and quite refreshing to find a dessert menu in Adelaide both innovative and of a high caliber. Highly impressed.

Beautifully fresh & tasty sushi with good service. My only complaint is the advice I got when asking how much I should order & ended up with way too much food.

1 for service? Some of you will think; -Surely this place can't be that bad-. Well, here is the story.. It was a Saturday Night, I had been invited to join some friends for dinner at Kenji. I have never been to this place and knew nothing about it, other than it's a Japanese style restaurant and that I need to be there by 7pm. I arrived promptly at 7pm, and politely informed the waiter/waitress (there were there of them behind the bar) that my friends had booked a table, and it could be under Andrew, David, or Victoria. After a bit of searching they finally found it, and informed me that the booking is for 3 people. I then informed the waiter that there would be an extra person joining us. The Waiter instantaneously responded 'I don't think that is possible'. One would think that adding one person should not be a problem. Having worked in the hospitality in my previous life, I was quite astonished that the person would behave in such manner. The golden rule of Hospitality is service, service and service. The response I received was, in my opinion, ill mannered. They eventually managed to give us a table, and to rub salt to the already wounded experience, the waitress (yes it's a different person), decided to say 'next time call when there is a change in number'. I would have forgiven the whole disastrous service had the food been fantastic. Unfortunately, they were mediocre. The sushi and sashimi were good (but why would you pay $15-26 for them when you can get similar stuff from sushi train for $5), the entree were commendable, and the main course was pedestrian. Overall- it has all the good intention of east meets west, but it turned out to be Asian try hard. As for value- it's non-existent. I'd suggest you spend a bit more and go to 'Shiki' at the Hyatt or spend less and go to 'Sushi Train'. Ps: my reply to the first waiter was -I don't think that's acceptable' J

The service is very good. The food is very good. Because it's MODERN Japanese food, you can't go there expecting authentic Japanese cuisine. There's no teriyaki chicken or California rolls. The sushi menu has different combinations from usual. There are a lot of inside out rolls to choose from (instead of seaweed there are seeds and salt and herbs on the outside of the sushi roll). It's definately worth a try but I don't think it was really my thing so I'm going to try a different Adelaide Japanese restaurant next time

I have eaten at virtually all Japanese restaurants in and around Adelaide and can save readers a lot of disappointment and expense. In my opinion, far and away the ... Best Sushi/Sashimi - SIMPLY SUSHI - Jetty Rd; Glenelg Best Japanese Hot Meals - KENJI's - Hutt St; Adelaide.
