This is a hidden secret for good reason - it's great food in a casual atmosphere. Whether you are dining as a couple or a large group, you are guaranteed a good night. The entrees and pizzas a brilliant - especially the turkish style pizza. Strictly BYO with a reasonable corkage, so you can take what you like. The staff are young but the service is excellent and even though it is a tiny kitchen the meals come quickly. No plates or cutlery in sight - just use your fingers and eat straight off the pizza block. Go a two or three course option so you get to try a bit of everything.

I shouldn't be writing this review because this place is one of those hidden gems that you want to keep for yourself but can't help telling people about the fantastic time that you have had. This is a converted house and the seating is a mix of inside the house, inside the "ball room", semi outdoor and outdoor. Wherever you sit though, there is heat from a fire so its always pleasant. Russell's is purely BYO with very reasonable corkage is per person so it is not uncommon to see eskis being brought in if there is a large group. The menu is limited but creative using quality ingredients. The staff are all young, friendly and obviously well trained as the service is quick and efficient even though the place is full. The pizzas are to die for - especially the turkish style pizzas. I'd recommend the 2 or 3 course options rather than ordering entrees, mains and desserts separately. The multi-course option includes corkage and you get to try multiple entrees, different pizzas and desserts.

Russell's is a bit of an SA icon, so we were expecting a lot from it. Especially as we had to wait 3 months for the table! The main building is a tin shack with a couple of small courtyards. The atmosphere is a real party feel, (This is not a candlelit dinner for 2, best with a group of mates) We went as a table of 8 on a winter's evening and the place was packed with people seated on tables outside in the cold! They seemed to be having a good time though. There are wood burning stoves both inside and outside to keep everyone warm. It's BYO only and the food comes at a fixed price 3 course option of $37 including corkage. The entree is decent bread, oil and salad, mains is a good choice of pizzas all wood oven baked and then dessert. (you have have a cheaper option without the dessert) The pizzas had great toppings and everyone just dives in, all the food is eaten without plates, knives and forks. Toppings are made from local products and there are a whole range of options meat, vegetarian and seafood. The pizza supply just keeps coming until everyone is stuffed. The selection of music is very eclectic, everything from 50's rock and roll through 70s, 80s indie bands to the present day. It all adds up to a great experience with wonderful local, greating tasting food that all of our party really enjoyed. Russell's delivered it's high expectations. We will be back. Highly recommended.

No plates or cutlery either was a lil difficult to eat Salad with! Whole evening was beautiful open fire was lovely as it was cold, don't rate the service but wasn't a deal breaker that's for sure! Such a wonderful experience! We went on a cold winters night so there were open fires going and the atmosphere is just wonderful! So different yet enjoyable. We wanted to buy some drinks but they don't sell any....the pointed us to the pub next door which you can buy and bring back into Russells. They do serve water though for those not wanting any other drinks. I think they're only open like 2 days a week and it gets busy so best to book well in advance! Fabulous little place!

Russell?s Pizza in Willunga is rumoured to serve spectacular wood-fire pizza. For over a year now I have been curious about the actual existence of the place and lacking the conveyance to get to Willunga, a historic township on the edge of McLaren Vale, about 47 km south of Adelaide it made my quest all the more impossible. Sydney-sider Heather, a fellow gastro-girl equipped with her Hyundai Hybrid offered Kristina, a Canadian with Estonian heritage (a new student also pursuing gastronomy at Cordon Blue, Adelaide) and me to be the designated driver on a gastro-adventure, all of us keen to investigate the actuality of the infamous pizza parlour in the middle of nowhere. . In the quest of handmade thin crust pizza we set out on our trip. After two hours of driving out of Adelaide we hit picturesque Victor Harbour, stopping at a lookout point to get a feel of the coastline and stretch out feet. Victor Harbour is home to fresh seafood and a number of bistros and cafes that are supposed to churn out notable dining experiences. At some point I hope to return to sample the fare and perhaps even swim with the tuna before it hits your plate as I have been told one can do out in the pristine blue waters. Fairy lights faintly illuminating darkness welcomes you, rickety chairs and wooden benches surrounding stone hearths breathing bright fires warmed huddled groups. It seemed like we were entering a mysterious, secret world, the setting almost reminiscent of the movie set of End of Days were the few remnants of humanity gather around canisters and open fires, the mood almost solemn. The air of sobriety however is a mood that hovers between 6.30 pm and quarter past seven. After 7.30 the place is infiltrated by large groups armed with eski?s (drink coolers on wheels) since the place is BYO, offering only a house red and white and a raucous crowd takes over the joint. Upon arrival we walked straight into what I assumed was the kitchen, politely asking if I could enter eager to catch the pizza process in action. But in fact it is an ?open kitchen? cum front office to place your orders, customers reading the menu that swirls around in colourful, artwork upon a blackboard above the wood-fire oven. After hearing about Russell's Pizza house from family and friends I was really looking forward to the evening after so much positive feedback from both word of mouth and online reviews. I came over from England to see family and we had booked 5 months in advance - a treat which we were all really looking forward to. The setting didn't disappoint and was fantastic - a very rustic, charming resturant with a good atmosphere and obviously takes good business from the locals, although it's only open for two nights a week! Offering a Bring Your Own (alcohol) policy I thought this would be a great evening with the chance to bring a few beers and enjoy the sunset with the family! However, unfortunately the evening wasn't so perfect as the reviews. No sooner had we turned up for our table and asking where we were placed I felt that the waitresses were quite rude and clearly not professionally trained in hospitality. After what seemed like an eternal battle to decipher the menu and what we needed to do, we went for the 2 course menu where we can eat as much as you can for $32 per head. The starters between 9 people comprised of one plate of salad, 9 meatballs, and two bowls of bread with oil and dukkah, the latter which can only be described as pigeon food. There is a NO CUTLERY policy, with no plates and amazingly only napkins to eat your salad on, with your fingers of course. The pizza's were fine, unfortunately the pizzas were nothing like what Italy can offer us, even though the food was fresh. I'd also advise bringing soft drinks too as surprisingly there are no soft drinks on sale and only 1 red and 1 white wine to sample. Also when I asked for a pepper mill for my meal I was slightly angered that the waitress looked at me as if I was some form of alien being - only to be given a completely empty mill, again, the service leaving something to be desired. I'm in the hospitality trade and I probably wouldn't visit again but visit for yourself and hopefully your experience will be better than ours.

Quite possibly the most overrated pizzeria in Australia. The pizza was ok, but disappointing, the staff were not at all friendly or helpful, and the whole place felt like an unwelcoming high school clique. In fact, I had to wait for a customer to get off the restaurant phone in order to make a payment. Won't go back. Having made the trip up from Adelaide on my first ever visit to Russell's and really looking forward to it, I'd recommend that people stay in the city and go to Good Life instead.
