A word from The Barn Bistro

The Barn Bistro is set in an restored 1840's coachway station and has been an institution for over 40 years. The Barn combines shared Tapas plates as well as our take on modern fusion comfort food. Also a great place to catch up for a coffee or a glass of botique Mclaren Vale wine in our wine bar. Our intention is to be the bridge between casual & fine dining , Our unique atmosphere and "no rules" approach make The Barn a must when visiting Mclaren Vale.

Wonderful food in a laid back environment. Great service and a lovely warm atmosphere even on a cold night in McLaren Vale

We went to the Barn and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The food was wonderful and the steak was cooked perfectly and as ordered. I found that sides were not needed as the meals were adequate in themselves. The wine list by the glass was good, but a better option is to look in the wine cellar, excellent selection of local and other wines. Staff were good at helping pick a good bottle, and did not suggest the most expensive which was a nice surprise. The staff were helpful and honest (again a refreshing surprise) and every one seemed to be enjoying the atmosphere.

The Barn was a wonderful place to dine with a good selection of wine and beautiful food. We were sat in the courtyard and had a few selections from the tapas menu, their OMG Thai Beef Clusters were very delicious and the morrocan mutton backstrap cooked to perfection paired with roasted vegetables in filo tart that could convince any child to eat veges. We ordered a few more things but all in all had a great night. Read my full review here: http://www.foodieling.com/2012/05/barn-bistro-mclaren-vale.html

The one vegetarian option on the main course menu was unavailable when we placed our order. I got the 'market fish of the day instead' which tasted more like fish fingers and chips more than a fresh fish dish. Well done steaks were still quite rare and the mains were served with a less than adequate 'salad'. It would have helped if the waiting staff had recommended a side to go with the mains but this did not happen. I won't be going back there as I am sure I could have got better versions of all of the meals served for about $5-10 cheaper at a local pub. On the plus side, the restaurant itself is lovely.

Tuesday lunch. Friendly and attentive staff, however food a major disappointment. Fish steak in Asian soup - fish was very nice, but soup a weird addition which flavour didn't really help ... left the soup. Bread and dips very average in quality and presentation - more like something you'd expect at a friends' BBQ, except not as good. Seemingly homemade apple pie was small and very thin, with just a scoop of plain vanilla icecream - again very average in quality. Overall, not somewhere we'll go back to.
